Biomimix, Inc develops and commercializes products based on processes and systems found in nature, otherwise known as biomimicry. Finding inspiration through understanding nature’s secrets and then scientifically imitating them is the goal of Biomimix.
Our current revenue generating products are in the skin care field. By understanding the natural cellular processes and osmoregulation, our subsidiary company, C’watre, was able to create novel skin care products capable of nourishing the skin in ways otherwise unachievable. Our Medusa technology is currently in a research and development phase focusing on ballast water treatment, remote potable water treatment, and hydrogen production for use with portable renewable energy platforms. Our Bone Grafix technology is also in a research and development phase focusing on exact replica bone grafting.
If you ask someone to explain the relationship between humpback whales and wind power, they will most certainly say, "there is no relationship". It is difficult to believe an 80,000 pound whale can be the key to increasing annual electrical production by 20 percent while reducing noise on wind turbines, fans, anything with blades.
However, scientists have studied the humpback whale and determined that the tubercules (irregular bumps on the flippers), allow whales to grip the water at sharper angles, improve aerodynamics and reduce drag by 32 percent versus smooth flippers that break the wind into turbulent vortices. The tubercules were observed and imitated to create more energy efficient systems.
Another example of biomimicry can be seen with termites and air conditioning in Zimbabwe.
The temperature inside a termite mound swings only one degree as the outside air temperature drastically changes, day and night. Scientists studied the mechanism by which the mounds efficiently stabilize the air temperature and modeled a cooling system to replicate the mechanism. The result is a system that uses 90 percent less energy. And to think, a sustainable system was built by observing termites.
The concept of Biomimicry is not difficult to believe. After all, Newton was inspired by an apple. Nature has been promoting more efficient systems via natural selection over the past 3.8 billion years. Nature has already unlocked the secret to survival.
